Rules for Retaining Documents

We all have those important documents that we know we must keep safe.  But how safe must you keep them and how long.  It is important to keep documents in a place that can be accessed when needed.

There are many options for storage.  At the very least everyone should have a home safe that can be secured and is fire proof.  From experience very few small safes are truly 100% fireproof. So for documents that are irreplaceable (or nearly) you should consider renting a safe deposit box at your bank. The expense is minimal especially when compared to the headache of trying to replace a document after a fire.

Here are a few guidelines.

What to store in your home safe
  • Tax records for six years
  • Pay stubs until W2 arrives
  • Credit card statements
  • Cancelled checks
  • Utility bill
What to store in a bank safe deposit box
  • Wills, deeds, and titles
  • Birth and death certificates
  • Passports
  • Military records
What should you keep indefinitely
  • Personal health records
  • Medical history
  • Retirement benefit statements

Friday's Fret - Temperature Controlled Trunk

    fret

[fret] (noun): an irritated state of mind; annoyance; vexation.

Friday's Frets are my little rants about something that annoys me, most often without reason. We all have them, those little peeves that you may or may not notice.

My complaint for this week is just an observation or maybe a question, no definitely a suggestion...I just need to get it to the right people.

Why doesn't the trunk of my car have a temperature control feature?

I haven't researched it so it is possible luxury cars are equipped with this feature.  But unfortunately I won't be driving a luxury car any time soon.

Here in Arkansas, the summers are hot and the winters are cold.  So anything I put in the trunk in the summer will melt and in the winter will freeze.  Personally this applies most often to groceries.  But it's a problem with luggage too. Melted deodorant and lipstick cause big pains. Word to the wise...do not let any of your technology equipment get too hot.  This applies to computers, tablets and phones. You also don't want to let that equipment get too cold.

It doesn't seem like would be a terribly complicated addition, right?  So why isn't standard?  Should I contact manufacturers?

    "The Intern"

Firstly, let me confirm that I have not been compensated in any way for this movie review.  As always this is my blissful opinion and my opinion only.

I have been anxiously awaiting the release of the movie "The Intern" since I saw the first trailer on TV weeks ago.
    www.theinternmovie.com

I knew I would see it if only because it has a couple of my favorites.  And who would have ever guessed they would be in a movie together.  Robert DeNiro & Anne Hathaway!

Recently, I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with my husband and he was kind enough to accompany me to this movie.  I enjoyed every second of it and I think he would agree.

I doubt it wins any awards but it is definitely a comfortable way to spend an hour or so.  It will make you laugh and even feel for the actors.

I walked away thinking I would love to have the opportunity to work in an environment similar to the one portrayed in this movie. Teamwork, creativity and fast-pace! Being a female in what seems like a man's world, I can somewhat relate to Anne's character. It is terribly hard to find a comfortable mix of home and work when you are forced to be a working mom. There is always the guilt of what you are missing with your family.

In regards to the primary point of the storyline, Senior Interns, I truly hope we never take for granted the experience of our elders.

Things change but experience always adds wisdom!

Go watch it or wait until it comes out on DVD.  Either way I guarantee you won't regret the time spent.

    It's Fall Y'all!

What an absolutely beautiful day in Arkansas!  The weather is perfect today to drive around and look at the fall colors as they begin to shine, take a stroll through the meadow or just sit on the front porch and watch the squirrels play.

I want to share this years Fall Wreath with you guys.

Any of you that have followed my blog for any length of time know how thrifty I am.  I put this wreath together for around $10.

    Items Used
    • wire wreath form ($2 - thrifted)
    • burlap ribbon ($6 - WalMart)
    • fall ribbon ($1 - Dollar Tree)
    • fall follage ($1 - Dollar Tree)
The "D" is cut from cardboard. Told you guys...I'm cheap.  I drew it, cut it out, then painted it orange and sprinkled it with glitter. Really you can't tell.  And fortunately my front door also has a glass outside door so the weather isn't an issue.
